I wonder why they couldn't do it the old fashioned way. If his sperm is ok and her eggs are ok.... why not just fuck?

All those vials of sperm can look the same after awhile. The technician looking at the order number maybe got dyslexic and handed the docter sperm vial #A3R5756HT instead of the ordered #A3R5657HT. What I think is sad is why reproductively challenged people have to explore in vitro at all. Why spend thousands of dollars forcing genetic miracles while there are so many children that need to be adopted? And then to get so upset that its the wrong sperm as to sue the clinic over it, if it hadn't worked they'd have had to adopt a kid without their genetics anyway.

OK according to other articles, what she sued for was the medical history of the sperm she was injected with, doesn't say anything about a monetary settlement, so thats perfectly reasonable. The clinic didn't want to tell her anything about the medical history of the person whose child she was carrying, that's messed up. But even so, expensive fertility treatments instead of plain old adoption are a societal complaint i have.

There are "so many children that need to be adopted?" Is that why couples looking to adopt face decade-long waiting lists or are forced to adopt children from foreign countries? What alternate reality are you living in?

Any non-stupid person should be able to understand why a couple would want their children to be theirs biologically, have children of the same race as them or avoid spending tens of thousands of dollars to adopt from the Ukraine.

There are at least 10 (I think more) little Chinese girls at my son's daycare. The parent's of these kids are all Caucasian over 40. Some of these parents could easily pass for 50. My guess is either they gave up trying and finally adopted and I think a few of them are career women who didn't have time for kids until they got older and by that time their eggs probably aren't as good.

Fertility treatments take years, genius. It takes the average barren couple seven years from the time they start trying artificial insemination and in vitro and god knows what else, while paying tens of thousands of dollars, till they finally successfully concieve. Meanwhile kids grow up entirely in the foster system without being adopted. If there's such a shortage why do foster houses have like 20 kids in them at a time? Paperwork inevitably makes the process last long, but artificial isn't lightening fast either. People who are serious about wanting children should take a long time to get one anyway, so they know its not a passing fancy.

One reason why one may not want to give out that information is for the anonymity of the donor. There have already been a few cases where a sperm donor gave sperm and then the recipiant came back and sued for child support. I remember at least 1 case where child support was granted (I never bothered following up to see if was appealed). I'm not saying this is their motive, but if the place they went to (not sure if the medical center they used was for fertility treatments only or also doubled as a general sperm bank) has a privacy clause in their paperwork, then they should stick with it no matter how noble the reason for wanting to know may be. I also agree with HP that most people would rather raise their own children (blood related) than an adopted child. No matter how much you love an adopted child, I'm sure there would be a little voice in the back of your head reminding you its not yoru genes being passed on.

He might have had a low sperm count or something. Maybe they were trying to do something for gender selection.

Oops! Time to get a fifth-trimester abortion, lady! Isn't it time for that bathwater to go, too?

QUOTE: "How stupid do you have to be to use the wrong sperm?"

It's done all the time. Plenty of women do it but not nessessarily by artifical means every time!!!

News flash, kiddo: Most foster children aren't up for adoption- only about 22% of them are. Furthermore, the median age for a child entering foster care is over 8 years old. [link]

I think it quite reasonable that prospective parents would want to raise their child from a baby or at least a toddler- not a school-age child who almost certainly came from a troubled background. More power to those who do adopt a foster child, but it's not for everybody.

In any case, suggesting that couples with fertility problems shouldn't try to concieve their own child it pretty elitist and condescending. I'd enjoy watching some airhead tell a couple with fertility issues to their face that they shouldn't have children, but should adopt an 8 year old instead. I'm pretty sure the phrase "heartless fuck" might be tossed out.

And where does it say how many of those 22% actually get adopted? I don’t feel heartless telling people who want kids with certain genes that they shouldn’t have children, because that’s not what being a parent is about. People who feel that way love their blond kids more than their brunettes, or the smart ones more than the dumb ones, and heartless things like that. A person who deserves to be a parent could see beyond that. If the world weren't overpopulated, i wouldnt have a problem with baby manufacturing at all. In fact the world is better off when we can gene-pick for fewer diseases. Adopting children goes that same way somewhat, because ppl whose genes are lousy enough to make them sterile really don't need to pass them on.

Yeah the donor shouldn't have his identity given out, and doesn't need to, but the baby i would think has a right to know if his family has a history of altzheimers or heart disease, or anything at all so it and its parents can plan for the future.
